The Complaint Challenge - A Year Long Endeavor

People complain about a lot of things on deviantART. Some of those complaints are perfectly legitimate, some not so much. There are a lot of issues that can be solved with a simple search through dA's FAQ directory. Problems that can't be solved that way can be sent to the Help Desk.

But sometimes people complain about stuff that's not so simple. People complain that the quality of Daily Deviations is going downhill. They complain that Community Volunteers are impersonal or inaccessible. They complain that Critique doesn't happen often enough or that when it does, there's no quality to it. They complain about the fragmentation of _________ Community and how when they joined, things were so much better.

My submission to thorns Complaint Challenge is going to cover as many of those harder to solve complaints as possible. I will design 12 activities, one for each month in 2012, that aim to address various complaints around dA. The activities are designed to promote positivity, community participation, and quality interaction. As incentives for participation, I am going to hold lotteries for points and other prizes at the end of each activity.

Every month I will produce a news article outlining the complaint the activity is meant to address, the rules for participation, and the prizes available. Each of those articles will include a link to this one, which explains the project as a whole, and this article will contain links to the activity outlines as they are produced.

How You Can Help

:bulletpurple: Participate!

Each activity will be designed so that any deviant should be able to participate. The tasks will be simple and straightforward.

:bulletpurple: Donate!

I aim to give out about 500 points after each activity. That amounts to 6000 points total, so any donation toward this project is very much appreciated. There is a donation widget at the top of my profile page.

:bulletpurple: Promote!

Spread the word about this through your journals and news articles. Tell your friends about it. Tweet it, Facebook it, Email it, however you let people know something awesome is going down - do that to this deviation.

:bulletpurple: Suggest!

Let me know how you tackle specific complaints. Your suggestions could help me design activities I hadn't thought of. You'll be given full credit for helping design said activities.

Complaints to be Addressed

January - Daily Deviations | Results Part I | Results Part II | Results Part III
February - Critique | CI: Lit Week | CI: Photography Week | Critique Contest
March - Lack of Participation SolutionsSanctuary
April - Community Volunteers/$taff
May - Navigation around deviantART
June - Trolls
July - Quality (of everything :stare:)
August - Fragmentation
September - Low Support for Lit Community
October - Miscats/Mature Content Filters
November - Popularity vs. Under-Exposure
December - Literature Gallery Organization

Complaints to be Addressed are subject to change depending on events within the community. (e.g. If Version 8 is released and magically makes navigating a breeze, I'll have to find something else to address in May.)

Questions? Leave a comment!

Thanks!

I really like your idea  and think your project is a positive one. I have always believed "If you are not apart of the Solution you are part of the Problem. With that being said, I would like to know how I can help you and the dA community with this project?

Also, I have been thinking of a few names for this project, below are a few ideas:

:bulletgreen: dA Solutions Sanctuary 2012 ( I like the word "Sanctuary" the term has come to be used for any place of safety).
Thus, dA members, staff and volunteers have a "safe" place to discuss complaints (problems) and brainstorm ideas and find (solutions) to each months listed topic.

:bulletgreen: dA Solutions Union

:bulletgreen: dA Resolution Sanctuary

Look forward to your reply,
Jo

I absolutely agree. :highfive: It bugs me so much when people are more than willing to complain about problems, but have trouble actually participating in the solution.

The number one way you can help is to participate and spread the word. You've already made a generous donation which I appreciate SO much!

I like the idea of that first one! Sanctuary is such a great word. I think I'm going to go ahead and take it, if you don't mind. I'll credit you with the name. :D

Awesome please feel free to use the suggestion  Sanctuary was my first option too :excited:

Also, I was thinking last night.......why not start a group for this project?? (not a super group)

It would be much easier to help you organize and keep track of all responses. As the project grows I think a group would be an asset to all participants and to dA staff, CV's and community as a whole.

I would enjoy helping you as much as possible with this project, and plan to participate and spread the word too

Look forward to your reply,
Jo

I have thought about making a group for it. If participation is good for this month, I will seriously consider it. It would definitely help with organization. But I want to make sure that if a group does get started, it lasts more than just one year. So the people who went into the project with me would need to be dedicated to seeing it through.

Changing the title now, thanks! :D

I understand and agree with you

Hopefully, participation will be high in numbers for the first month, time will tell.

I see the changed title now, looks awesome :excited:

:fingerscrossed: It has been pretty good so far. I've already got 10 participants, and I know quite a few people are waiting and just sending me all their DD suggestions at once. So I think it is going to be good. But we'll see. :)

This is exactly the kind of project I was hoping to see when I made the contest! I love you! I would ask to marry you if I wasn't married already. You are just so wonderful!

I'm sure I'll have something constructive to say soon, but right now I'm too busy being impressed. (And my brain is a little friend from an exploding message center.)

I'm glad you like the idea. I hope I'll be successful in implementing it. :fear: I've got fairly certain outlines through March, but the rest of the year is still fuzzy so I may come to you for ideas long after your contest is over.

what do you think about romantic relationships and marriages between non-couples- such as triples or quadruples? (where all parties are involved with all other parties)

i don't think there is such a thing... but why not?

At the moment, I'm just with my primary boyfriend, but am casually sort of maybe seeing another girl as well, and he has another girlfriend :) I was previously with another boy, but we split up last year for various reasons. (Not poly related). It's not for everyone, but it works for us :)

Well most polygamous families do have full time relationships with all of the spouses involved. I mean, it is difficult not to when you're all living in the same house.

yes, but it's a different kind of relationship. it's not like they are all sleeping together or buying gifts for the others for valentine or anything. they don't go out all of them on dates and so on. the wives are all married to the same guy so with him they do but with eachother it's a different kind of relationship.

For the most part. There are some cultures in the world where it is a woman with multiple husbands. I read about one in Singapore back in college, and there are some in parts of Asia and Africa, too. :P Who knows how those ones are done?

The answer to the "the DDs are going downhill" comment is kind of easy. :P I just link people to the DDs back in 2004 and 2005. Agreed that linking them to older DDs than that is cruel and pressing the advantage too much...

So basically right now we wait for the news article to tell us how to participate?

Man, June is gonna be a fuuuuuuun month.

Seriously though, this looks awesome. Only suggestion I can think of is to build flexibility into your plan so if a big issue comes up one month that couldn't have been predicted, you could shift focus onto that if you wanted!
